Controlling a DV Deck in Vegas Capture
I usually transfer mini DV tape into Vegas 6d through a FireWire connection between the computer and a JVC SR 20 mini DV deck. I use the Vegas capture screen set to external capture device to do this and to control the JVC deck. Whenever I try to rewind or fast-forward the deck with the controls in the Vegas capture screen, the deck turns itself off and the computer locks up. The external capture option in the drop-down menu disappears and everything needs to be rebooted and restarted. If I just play the tape without rewinding it, everything works fine.
Does anyone know what is going on here? Has anyone else had trouble with FireWire capture using either the JVC SR 20 or SR 30 mini DV decks. Is there a better option than Firewire capture for these decks. The computer is running Windows XP with the newest media center and Windows XP updates. |

Solution to Problem
After ruling out computer and software issues, I concluded that the problem had to be in the DV deck. I took off the top and watched the transport work. It was putting a loop in the tape instead of pulling it tight across the transport. This deck was just repaired so apparently it was not not done correctly.
