Vegas 6.0c + Boris Red

I am considering Boris Red 3 as my first plug in purchase for Vegas. I wish to add compositing and 3d functionality to my work with still motion projects, video montages, etc...if you have used Boris Red I'd like to hear about it....

I have it but can't say I've really "used" it. From what I have seen, it is very powerful but has a huge learning curve. The training DVD from Class On Demand helped me with the beginning workflow issues.

Note that when used with Vegas there are some limitations. For example, if you use it directly on the timeline, the Ram setting should be on zero and only the first frame will be passed to RED. Therefore, you should also experiment with using it in stand-alone mode as well. Definitely worth looking at, though.

Edward,

I was concerned about the very issue you mentioned, the learning curve.

I want to compose scenes, for example, where a video is playing within a still shot, say in a picture frame, or on a billboard. Are there programs you are aware of that are less difficult to exploit that can help compose these kinds of still motion and video? Can I do the previous example in Vegas itself?

Yes, you can do the above using just Vegas. Use Pan/Crop and/or Track Motion to resize and position the video to be displayed within the frame or billboard. Naturally it is best if the frame or billboard is stationary.

i find after effects works quite well (and is considerably cheaper) as does Combustion (u wont fnd a better keyer... IMO)
On top of that, combustion allows for the use of particle illusion emitters

Depends on some factors but typically uncompressed AVI is used.
