422 playback at DVinfo.net

I edit with Vegas 17 pro. My computer is fast with 32gb RAM. Editing 10 bit XF605 mxf files is fairly sluggish in the preview window, which has to be in lowest rez mode to get any 'flow' to the footage. Would 64gb make a big difference? As in, would I be able to preview in full mode?

I watched this short video, enabled the recommended software, and my system plays back 422 clips without issue via the installed player and shows now a Windows thumbnail. BUT the files remain sluggish in Vegas. So what's the main issue? hardware or software? Vegas upgrade needed? Here is the link

Sorry to say but it's Vegas that's the issue. You will find the same in Vegas 18 and 19. Both Sony and Canon XAVC and XF-AVC H. 264-based files, especially Long GOP file versions need a decent CPU and GPU to handle these files at the best of times. On a PC with an overclocked 5.3GHz CPU and an 11GB Nvidia card and SSDs for video playback Vegas struggles. On the same machine running DaVinci Resolve, so exactly the same hardware, Resolve plays 4K 500Mbps XAVC smoothly at full resolution with no issues whatsoever.

I've been with Vegas since v2.0. I'm a great lover of Vegas and its workflow and capabilities but with today's larger higher bit rate files I'm finding it frustrating trying to edit these files smoothly. If I have to work in Vegas with these high process demand video files I convert them to Cineform or Prores. Normally Cineform unless the client needs to go to Mac with the files. For Mac the ProRes files are the go. For native editing of the files, no transcoding, I'm finding it hard to go past Resolve... which is a very powerful fully featured piece of NLE/Grading software that's very much up there with the best of them.
