How deep can you nest projects?
I was just wondering...How deep can you nest projects within projects?
Does anyone know what the limit is, if any? Thank you. |

Re: How deep can you nest projects?
I don't know that there's a limit. However, I also don't know that I'd go beyond the first level.

Re: How deep can you nest projects?
I regularly nest 5 or 6 projects together, total time from 45 minutes to 2+ hours.
It makes the creation and editing of these segments of the final project simpler and safer for me but the price you pay is extremely long render times. My individual projects may have a lot of stills with transitions and the video sections are usually multicam from 4 or even 5 cams and several audio recorders, so obviously thats a lot for Vegas to handle. Your machine spec. is going to be relevant obviously. Mine is a decent i7 with plenty of RAM etc. A 1 hour standard def DVD at a one pass constant bit rate of 8 might take 6 hours. A 1 hour MP4 1920x1080 2-pass 14-10 might take 16 hours. Needless to say I tend to render them overnight! Pete |

Re: How deep can you nest projects?
Pete, but that's at a single level. I believe he was referring to nesting a project. And then taking that project with the nested project and nesting that project. And then taking that project and nesting that project. i.e. a nest inside of a nest inside of a nest.

Re: How deep can you nest projects?
You are correct Mr. Edward Troxel.
I wasn't planning on stacking them indefinitely. I had a possible outline in my head: 1. Base Level: Correct Audio + Video 2. 2nd Level: Sync Multicam Base Level Video, Combine and Cut/Fade of Audio + Video 3. 3rd Level: Drop in Scene Markers, Fade In Beginning/Fade Out End and Render. Thank you. |

Re: How deep can you nest projects?
I have found longer render times myself in the past with nested projects.
I dont really understand why it should be so. If you are using nests just to "group" sequences together, I can't see why it should dramatically change render times. Is it a problem with the way Vegas interprets the order of rendering ie. Render the whole nest first then render it in the project again? Nesting would be a much more handy tool if we could use it by marquee selecting events on the timeline and then right click, Nest. Your selected media now appear as one event and has a right click select option of "Edit in Vegas". The advantage of this, apart from being faster, would be that the whole Project Properties settings in the nest would automatically be exactly the same as the master project, so no issues with Field order, pixel format, etc, mis matches. Could a script add this functionality?

Re: How deep can you nest projects?
A Nest is only a Proxy, it's NOT the final Render. So what ever you fancy as a final render for that Proxy-Nest - has THEN to be rendered-to too, and that's why it takes so long. Nest another and you get double trouble - Nest any further and you're looking at some serious coffee-break timing.
I have to have a really good reason to be going beyond 3 DOWNARDS nests. The Laws of Diminishing returns comes into play. And again, Vegas is hoisted by it's own Can-Do Petard! - That'll be in Hamlet Act3 Scene2 - well known quote. Grazie |
