Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
This would be really great, if Sony released a veg file where we could benchmark our cards.
We could then nail down card v card performance, and, as I suspect to be the case, see if the same cards are getting different results on different systems.

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
OMG 2.5 GB!!!
Sony remind me of an apprentice I used to have... Find the hardest possible way to do something so simple. Surely there would be a way to make an animated .veg with media generators or one or 2 still images, add a few FX that are particularly hard on GPU. A download that would be 400kb instead of 2.5GB Might give it a go this arv.

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
been downloading that Vegas project all afternoon, have some results soon.
Here is a fun little veg I made while I was waiting. Its a simple test that doesnt require a massive download. Be interested to see some other results if people could give it a go. Rendering to Sony AVC Bluray 16Mbps 50i I got - Laptop i7 GT540m = 6min 8sec Desktop 3930k i7 and GTX580 =1min34sec

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
ok, Sony's own press release project results-
3930k i7 GTX580 3GB 32GB ram #1. XDCAM EX HQ 1920x1080-60i 35 Mbps VBR in 125 sec., MP4 file size 184 MB = 56sec #2. MainConcept AVC/AAC Internet HD 1080p in 103 sec., MP4 file size 86.2MB = 51sec Thats strange Adrian, my file sizes are slightly different to yours. In comparison my i7 laptop took 5min 2sec to do the XD cam render, up till now I thought it was pretty quick.

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
Thanks Adrian, be good to get a few more.
Be very interesting to see if any of the cheaper cards are offering higher than anticipated results, or vice versa with the more high end cards not delivering what you would expect.

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
i moved from pinnacle to sony vegas pro 13. From the beginning I have this preview problem to.
see my posted video here: when the camera pans you see distortion/choppy movement. This was not in pinnacle studio 16 I had. (see that in video) I know this will be not see when render to a file. But I like to my project at full screen to judge colors and effects, ... These were 1080/50 avchd files from sony nex-ea50. Even lower quality files had same issue. I have i7 2600k processor, 16gig ram and nvidea gforce gt220 Just learning sony vegas. |

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
Hi Tom,
Despite what is said about editing AVCHD natively, I found Vegas (my last version was Pro 10) to be much happier with a more friendy intermediate codec such as Cineform. Even then it was better with a lower preview quality setting. I would suggest proxy editing, but I found it a pain to do the double substitution and not totally accurate - cuts seemed to move a few frames for example. Also you won't see full quality at full screen from the low res. images. The only ideas I can offer are: Transcode to a good intermediate codec like Cineform or DNxHD for editing (I happen to believe this should always be done unless using proxies) or get used to monitoring with a normal sized preview window at as low a quality setting as you can possibly use, only switching to higher quality/larger size when it is required to check something critical. Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
Hi Tom and Dave
I still use 10e and on an 17, 2600 also with 16GB ram ... smooth preview always BUT I run my preview and a second monitor ... all you do on setup is drag the preview window over to the second monitor and Vegas will keep it there always. Tom? Watch the top of the preview window and leave the setup in auto and play a video. You should see the preview drop the resolution automatically to half if the processor is over loaded which keeps the preview smooth so it just might be your preview settings??? It will still look good even at half res!! You might be forcing the preview to display at full resolution all the time and if so yes, it will struggle after a while ..keep the settings on auto. I only run my files in native format and don't need to ever transcode (on my old duocore I definitely needed to transcode first but the i7 has no issues on my native EA-50 files at all. Chris |

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
Chris, Dave,
When I preview the original files on full screen (not with vegas but with splash lite player) there is no tearing! So it must be something with vegas. I use a LCD tv connected to my pc with HDMI. Maybe the 50/60Hz bewteen pc and tv causing this tearing. Who's using vegas on a external tv (not monitor) with HDMI cable? strange that pinnacle studio had not this tearing problem. |

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
connected my pc to 2 other lcd tv's and the same tearing. Probably a wrong setup in my vegas to watch full screen without tearing. Like I said: in pinnacle studio full screen was perfect.

Re: Preview choppy in Vegas 11 but not in Premier CS5.5
Preview in Vegas absolutely sucks. I can barely play a single of video at Best in large screen without issues. Video is on SSD and I'm overclocked with 6 core hyperthreading at 4 ghz.
Vegas is amazing for editing but preview is absolutley horrible and always has been. I always have a decent system, usually overclocked, plenty of ram, large power supply, and it still sucks. I hate Vegas for this. True I use a 30" monitor, but still, seemed true on my 24" also.
