I cannot confirm you configuration will or will not work with Win 7. I can offer the opinion your laptop was released in 2007 and that if it were me I would buy a new machine. Your laptop was excellent when it was new, but you are at a point when you might need to think about upgrading.
Your PC was not built for Windows 7, it was made with Vista or XP in mind I'm sure, so you're two OSs ahead of your hardware. It's logical you need a new machine. |

a newer laptop will be the best choice. If video-editing is a hobby you could make a backup of your existing system and install Win 7 as a trial, you would have 30 days to try it out until you have to activate it. That should be enough time to try all important applications.
I was surprised how much driver support Windows has got nowadays, device manager found missing drivers after doing a search for them on a Dell system without any other manual intervention. |

Marcus, I cannot recommend which system or brand, but HP and Dell both would be logical places to start.
I would look at the fastest processor you can afford. You will get much more power in a desktop for less money, for sure. |

Can't recommend a machine, but just buy one with the fastest processor you can afford, and a good video card if possible. The CPU is the main thing and is what drives the cost of most any machine.

Re: Vegas 11 and Dell Precision m6300
I also use a Dell Precision M6300. I installed Windows 7 as second OS about two years ago and only use Windows 7 since then. No problems with Windows 7.
I also use Vegas Pro 11 on same system. It works fine. Only downside is with the grafic device of the M6300 there is no GPU-support of video processing for Vegas Pro 11 available. But GPU support for rendering to Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC works fine. |

I've heard that another graphics adapter is possible with this machine. Do you know what prerequisites there are to be able to get gpu video processing capability in Vegas Pro 11? Is it the amount of graphics RAM (how much is the minimum?) or the CUDA version?

The downside is you can't use GPU supported video processing on the M6300 with VP11.

Re: Vegas 11 and Dell Precision m6300
From what i understood i Didn t Have the benefits of the GPU acceleration right? If so, i could tell you that with Vegas 10 i Was very Pleased with the render Times! I Have an Nvidia Quadro Fx 3600.
Marco r u still confortable with your m6300 or r u planning to buy a new one? |

Re: Vegas 11 and Dell Precision m6300
Vegas Pro 11 offers two different types of GPU acceleration. One is for render to Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC and this can be used by the M6300. The other one is for video processing (fx calculation and preview boost) and this cannot be used by the M6300.
I'm pretty sure I will use my M6300 another few years. It works fine for me. |

Re: Vegas 11 and Dell Precision m6300
Marcus,
Im not that up on laptops, hardly use them. However I purchased a Sony vaio F series with an i7 processor running 2.9 g and it runs 11 beautifully virtually everything in real time.
