dvda video format difference

Hey.

I finally found some good info on creating a AVCHD disc with DVDA that will work on my PS3 with full menus. One of the pieces of this puzzle is setting the video format for the disc in DVDA to AVC instead of MPEG-2. I can't find any explanation on what does what (is one format better than the other, etc...).

My questions are 1) what's the difference? 2) should I render out my videos as .avc files instead of .m2ts files in Vegas for better quality when I make a disc with the video format set to .avc.

Thanks,
Rich
