.mts files not being read

I have downloaded clips from a Sony Camcorder (HDR-SR12) and Vegas 8 Pro 8.1 (64), doesn't seem to recognise them. I checked in properties and they are .mts files.

How can I edit these in Vegas ?

Sorry for this last post, as it now appears that Vegas IS reading these OK. It appeared that they were an unsupported format but I must have been reading them directly through Windows. I downloaded K-Lite codec and this fixed the problem.

However, as I want to render the .mts out to SD .AVI, should I convert these to AVI before editing to make things easier, or doesn't it matter ?
