Information on "Field First"

I am a novice when it comes to understanding what upper/lower field first means. Is there a location where I can find an explanation on these fields and what they mean to me. I am starting to edit HDV and AVCHD and I am used to the default DV template (Vegas 8.0 C). I am looking for documentation on the differences and how I better use the available templates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fields refers to what makes up a full frame of interlaced footage. 2 fields make up one frame. DV is lower field first. HDV is upper field first. Progressive video is not interlaced and therefor has no fields.
