Fading effects?

Hi, not sure if this has been asked before, if yes, please post the link:

I'm using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum and want to put film effects over a music video, BUT:
not over the entire length,
I'd like to fade them in and out, so that the max "effect" is at a precise moment. Is that possible? I've tried adding the effect to 5 frame sections in increasing degrees, but it looks very "hucky" (sp) ;-) Not like the smooth fade in and out of the dissolve effect , for example.

Any help appreciated,
Petra

At the bottom of all effects dialogs is a timeline. Add keyframes on this timeline to adjust the effect over time.
