Any tips for transitions?

I just got Vegas Movie Studio and it's pretty nice. I just have trouble with transitions. No matter how I do it I always seem to get random results. I'll get a nice fade out then something that looks like a jump cut. Should I set the two clips further apart or something? Thanks in advance for all responses.

To make a transition/dissolve, simply take the clip on the right hand side and move it left until it overlaps the clip on the left hand side. The longer the overlap, the longer the dissolve. The shorter the overlap, the shorter the dissolve.
