Video production software

I am starting up a new wedding video company in Ontario, Canada and I was wondering if you could help me choose a good software package to buy that would give me the best options for editing and production.

"Hi, I'm just opening my life up to new horizons, I'm just wondering if anyone out there could reccomend a religion for me to follow?"

Sorry Eddie, just a little riff on the 'platform wars' that are sure to follow. You actually don't give people much to go on... What platform do you prefer, Mac or PC? What sort of computer background do you have, build your own or buy ready made? DO you HAVE a system already? If so, what are the specs? Do you have experience with other compositing or media software like Adobe Photoshop, or Soundforge? And perhaps most importantly, how much do you want to spend?
