Importing jpeg issues in FCP from scanner

After years of other people scanning photos for me, I got an Epson V600 and doing it myself.
However, the jpgs are grayed out when I navigate to them from FCP for importing. For testing purposes, I opened one up in FCP, did a "save as" and I renamed it, and that seemed to work. I also scanned in TIFF format, and that worked, too, but 12 mgs for a file seems excessive. It's definitely RGB, not CMYK. Any ideas anybody?

Thank you.
