Anybody capturing from the mixer??
I've got an event this weekend, and would like to capture live music into my XH A1 via the soundboard, while at the same time, having a shotgun mic pointed at my interviewed subjects....
Is it possible to have the band to somehow output all the elements on stage wireless, or am i better off putting a drum mic over the speaker?? I would really love to get the best sound of live music and some abient sound from the people around me... I'm very audio impaired, so please be gentle... BTW, this is a fund raising event, and the budget is very little for these folks.... Thnx. |

you can do that but only if the insstruments are mic'd thru and if the sound person knows what they are doing. There was a thread as of yesterday in the audio forum all about plugging into a board and some things to watch for.
search there for the answers-you'll get more response I think than here in the wedding board.

I always try to get my audio from the mixer first, I usually call the "sound people" before an event and ask them what they have and if they will provide an output channel for my XHA1. Best audio you get is from the mixer if you are working with professionals, I give them a wireless transmitter sometimes a XLR cable and it's all systems go.

My only words of advice are these ...
First, never trust the sound tech to give you what you need. I just recently shot an event at the Taco Bell Arena here in Boise and the sound tech was NOT a volunteer. I had two recording sources plugged into their soundboard, a primary and a backup. Before the event both of them had a proper feed. During the event the sound tech did something and my backup device got ZERO audio. He also did something with my primary because when the emcee was speaking I would sometimes get music from a CD laid over the top of it because the sound tech was cuing up the music and for some reason was patching it into my feed early. Luckily I had backups for ambient as well that I used to cover this. Second, and this is because of the first part, always have a backup. Do NOT rely on the sound from the soundboard unless you're just a really lucky guy. |

I just use my Sennheiser G2 wireless mic, and hang it over the speaker or stage monitor with the sensitivity all the way down on the transmitter and receiver. The audio level is auto on my XH-A1, and the mic is hanging below the twitter speaker and above the woofer, so I get a good mix (checked in my headphones from A1 for a perfect placement).
When the music stops, I get great sound from crowd and ambiance noise as well plus auto leveling. I was able to capture very low bass without distortion, when the camera mic in comparizon was distorting like crazy.
