UWOL 40 Virtual Postcard from Malta
ok so I put my name down for this thinking whatever the theme was it would feature Irish landscape and wildlife, I would have the cameras, lens and stabilisation I'd need, even a drone. It turned out, because of other commitments, I wasn't in a position to shoot anything at all and I was due for a trip with six others to Malta for a short break at the end of October. So i took with me a Sony HDR-PJ790 and a Sony DSC-RX100M3, both small and compact, because we were travelling light, no checked bags there was no chance of a tripod or monopod, which I would have liked, my hand holding isn't the best. When we got to Malta I was surprised at the lack of wildlife, especially birds, the only ones I saw were some small ones and lots of pigeons not one seagull or any other bird you'd usually associate with costal areas, I've learned since that there is an active hunting community on the island that will, given the chance shoot anything out of the sky. I captured about an hour's worth of footage, because we were generally on tour it was like a live event shoot, no chance to go back and do a retake, I was constrained by time when we arrived back home as I think I had about a day and a half to edit, and I'm a slow editor. It was difficult to choose what to include and what to drop, I'm sure I could have made a dozen short movies out of what I had! I would have liked to narrate this as I dont think it's very informative to the viewer, I also would have liked to include a map with a animated marker on where the shot was based, but time was against me. But for all that I enjoyed doing it. Any comments feedback anything at all is welcome. Level 2 Thanks Rob

Re: UWOL 40 Virtual Postcard from Malta
Hi Rob,
This was a nice film from Malta. Made me want to visit there myself. You had a good mix of close ups and wide shots, daily life and history, which I really like. I understand your challenges with handheld filming, as I often do that myself (including my own uwol40 film). Not sure which editing software you use, but Adobe Premiere (and most likely the others too), have a tool called warp stabilizer, which helps a lot when shooting handheld. All in all, a good film! Hope to see you back in January. |

Rob not to bad for trying to do it on a break. I'm terrible at hand hold shooting so I try to avoid doing it but sometimes it has to be done. Having stabilizing software has been really handy for me. There was a few shots with wind noise that I wonder if you could have dropped the audio. Thanks for a look around Malta.

Hi Rob,
Only level 3 comments from me, because I completely understand your intent here. Because I will probably never travel to Malta I quite enjoyed taking a little tour via your footage. On another note, I read you are from Ireland, a destination definitely on my bucket list! I'll have to watch for future challenges in hopes of seeing films shot in your homeland.

Rob
I enjoyed seeing your views of Malta. I thought the music selection gave a nice feel to the video. the shots of just the water seemed unnecessary to your film, perhaps you were trying to get the reflections. nice enjoyable watch!!! look forward to more.

Hi Dale,
Thanks for the comments, looking back at it now, you're right! the dull water doesn't do anything for it, don't know why I left it in.
