Need longer screw for tripod plate

I have a Promaster 6050 (using this while I save for something a bit more upscale) and the screw on the quick release plate is not long enough to let me sandwich a shoulder mount between it and the camera. I want to do this so I can go from shoulder mount to tripod quickly. The shoulder mount is made out of a metal bar which is approximately 1/8 of an inch thick. I think I would also have this problem if I wanted to use an L bracket for my wireless receiver.

A friend has a Velbon (not sure what the model is tripod) and the screw was short on that one too.

I know I can get a longer screw from Home Depot but not sure how to remove the old one from the plate and install a new one.

Thanks in advance.

Figured it out....With a lot of elbow grease and some heavy duty pliers you can remove the screw and drop in a longer version of the old faithful 1/4-20 screw...worked like a charm....
