New to tripods: a what to buy thread

I am relatively new to tripods. I've owned 1 and it was second hand for $20 and the head just falls off. So i know next to nothing about decent tripods. I would like to get one that doesn't fall apart and wont crumble if i choose to mount my xl2 to it.

What i'm looking for in a tripod:
-Simple, i want it to hold my camera and pan/tilt smoothly
-Hold my XL2 and my HDR-HC1 (but not at once haha)
-Budget, would love it <$250AUD but i am willing to exceed that if need be
-Doesn't need to be huge, 4ft max height would be more than enough

If you guys could help me out I'd be forever grateful.
Cheers
