How long should a tripod last?
If I invest now in a really good tripod set, like a Vinten, how long can I expect it to last?

If properly cared for, it will last a lifetime. I have tripods that are 25+ years old and still perform within spec.

I have 2 pairs of wood sticks that I've had for 25 years, and I bought them used! I also have an $80 surveyors tripod that I use for crane work (I modified it to hold more weight) that's been going strong for about 6 years.
