Levelling head/center column question

I just mounted a Bogen 501HDV head to a pair of 3221PRO legs. Now I realize it is much harder to setup for a level shot, even for a quickie. I was using a three way pan/tilt before, so leveling was a snap no matter how uneven the legs were.

I believe a solution would be either the Bogen 438 compact levelling head or the Bogen 555B levelling center column. The specs indicate 10 and 15 degrees range of adjustment. Here is the duh question. I assume I have to get the tripod level within 10-15 degrees and then fine tune the rest with either of these two products?

I have the Bogen 438 level unit with Gitzo carbon sticks and 503HDV head.
It works great.
