Manfrotto 316

I need some help with choosing tripod. I mainly shoot sports (like the local college football team and twintip skiing) and I can't stand my forty year old velbon tripod anymore. I've gotten a good price on a Manfrotto 316 head (half the price of a 501), but I haven't found anyone with any experience with it. I would appreciate your opinion on this deal.

But if I decide to go for the 316, which legs should I get? I believe the 316 is a 100mm bowl. I would like something light so I don't have to break my back carrying it while shooting backcountry skiing and such.

Thanks
