suicide disclaimer
maybe the wrong title but it'll do
I'm completing a short film to get funding for a feature doco and the subject matter is depression & suicide. usually there is closing text suggesting people call lifeline etc but I can't seem to find any sort of template - any suggestions. |

Re: suicide disclaimer
In the UK it's aways "If you have been affected by this programme, please cal ......" I don't think there's a standard text? I understand the reasons, but these warnings are applied to so many programmes nowadays, I think they lost the impact a long time ago.

Re: suicide disclaimer
Trigger warnings, the great millennial safe-space siren, have certainly been done to death. So often I see "graphic warning" etc on a news story and it's only being used to say between the lines "hey, we got the good stuff / photos / video" and therefore to click through.
I'd recommend asking the mental health professionals what sort of text would be best. They are the ones who would best know the thinking of a mind that could easily be brought into suicide ideation by consuming the content of your program. Andrew |

Paul,
As someone who came out the other side of that dark place, I'd say don't fuss over it too much. Keep it simple and to the point. If anyone takes offense, take it on as if you hit a nerve and let them sort it out. You're not responsible for how someone takes in information; your job is to share it authentically and from a non self-serving perspective. I can tell you that during that time I was constantly in search of any morsel of information that might have helped me sort it all out. Back then if I saw a doc about the topic I'd probably want to see more simply because I was living it and needed an outsiders perspective. My only advice is to make sure it doesn't come off as glorifying the ordeal in any way. There's a few "reality" shows here about similar topics and it always disgusts me to see them being pushed in the same manner as "Deadliest Catch". You know what I mean. Outside of that, full steam ahead brother - and buona fortuna. |
