Looking for more affordable broadband...

Aside from cable, anyone have recommendations for affordable broadband? I'm getting "stiffed" at $50 a month for Bellsouth DSL...

WOW! What does cable cost? Brighthouse (Time Warner) has deals for faculty & students over here. I get cable access for about $30 a month. This is in addition to my regular cable bill, but a lot cheaper than $50 a month. Verizon offers DSL (that's DLS for the Wranglers in Vancouver, I guess) here for about $25 a month

I had Verizon DSL for several years - was one of their first customers here in South Jersey as a matter of fact. We still have it at our production center at work and it's always been very good. Recently Verizon has obviously been feeling the pinch however and have lowered their rates plus are offering a free wireless router to new clients (OT: it saddens me to see a great talent like James Earl Jones doing those moronic Verizon DSL commercials).

When I moved out to the woods two years ago I couldn't get DSL so I went with Comcast cable. It costs about $50/month here, but the speed is about 3x what Verizon was providing, both up and downstream. Their service has also been very responsive when I've had some problems. Wish it were cheaper, but my only other option was a DirectPC satellite link which was quite a bit more expensive and much slower.

This always used to be a great site to shop for broadband, but I haven't had much reason to browse it recently: http://www.dslreports.com

I'm sure he's weeping all the way to the bank... ;)

On topic, I have Earthlink cable through Time Warner in NYC. It's $41 a month for great, very fast service. I've seen that Verizon DSL offer, but I can't imagine it being better/faster than what I've got.

DSL is as cheap as $15 - $25 here if you are willing to cope with
maximum usage per month and such. I pay $55 for my ADSL line,
but that is 2 mbit down and 1 mbit up with no bandwidth limit
whatsoever, allowed to run any server/service I want (including
a mail server) and unlimited e-mail addresses at my subdomain.

No smaller DSL line there which is cheaper Heath?

It's still Bellsouth. They sold their cell phone service to Cingular Wireless.
