The Celebration
One of the best films ever shot on MiniDV was released in North America today. "The Celebration". Do yourself a favour and buy it / rent it. It's a Thomas Vinteberg movie, one of the first made in the Dogme style, using only 'natural' light with a consumer DV cam. The cinematographer was Anthony Dodd Mantle who went on to shoot "28 Days Later". As the Dogme says, what is important is not the technique but the story. It's about a well-to-do Danish family who gather to celebrate the 60th birthday of the family patriarch in the hotel that they own in the secluded countryside. Gathered with them are many friends and relations. The young son is supposed to host the proceedings, beginning with a toast for his father. Instead, he begins by revealing the first in a few dark family secrets...

I actually saw a gray market import a few years ago. Small single chip dv camcorder. Excellent.
BTW, for those of you living in South FL, Lions Video on Ponce DeLeon in Coral Gables(Miami) has an uncut Euro version with subtitles available. They are about the only Video store in South FL that specializes in Foreign imports. They also have 'The Idiots" another Dogme film. |
