Truth be told, that's actually a pretty mild reaction. I've seen worse from celebrities.
When I was an assistant cameraman, I got called a m***f***er by a certain famous rockstar from Indiana, just for distracting him while I was updating the slate during his take.

In De Niro's defense "generally more energetic" is pretty crummy direction, especially if he's talking about his own film festival. If I won an academy award and someone gave me that kind of direction then I would probably tell him that he need's to give direction a "generally more accurately" and walk off set. (which De Niro may have done)

It was a classy, low key, understated responce that even your grandkids could watch. So rare in this day. I got quite a chuckle out of it.
