Kino (not the lights)

Hi there, just wanted to introduce the Kino community, of which I am a member.

Kino is a community of video artists founded in Montreal in 1998. The objective was to encourage video artists to make movies by giving them a venue to screen them, and inspire them to do more with less. The motto is: "do well with nothing, do better with little, and do it right now!".

Since them, the community has grown, first in the Quebec province, then to the rest of Canada, Europe, Africa and the US. South America is being courted right now, and it's only a matter of time before Asia gets in on the game. There are currently about 50 cells worldwide, each of which is independent, but all have the same objectives. The more active cells have monthly screenings.

The group also organises special events called Kino-Kabarets, which are often associated with film festivals. A Kino-Kabaret is basically a video production marathon, with a screening every 48 hours. They are not competitions and there are no prizes to win. The biggest one, the Montreal Fall Kino-Kabaret, goes on for 10 days (that's 5 screenings) in October and welcomes over 50 directors from all Kino cells. Kino-Kabarets are often used in order to provoke the birth of new Kino cells.

These Kabarets occur all over the world, all year long, either organised by Kino-Montreal or by local cells. This year, there have been some in Adelaide (Australia), Manchester (UK), Vienna (Austria), Hamburg (Germany), Louisville (KY, US), Madison (WI, US), Sao Palo (Brasil), Trouville (France), Barcelona (Spain). There are upcoming ones in Berlin (Germany) and Brest (France).

Here is a partial listing of existing Kino cells (nobody really knows the extent of the damage so far). Maybe there is one next to you?
