Any suggestions for my piece...

I've got an interrogation room scene going on here and I want to experiment a little bit trying to get a richer film look in post.

Here's 2 quick screen caps I did of what I'm working with:

Anyone have any ideas on something I should try? I want to keep the background dark but make the guy pop out a little bit brighter. I'm using FCP and AE 6.5, but I don't have any really expensive plugs like magic bullet.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I just took your .jpg file into Photo Shop Elements, and adjusted contrast up, and barely bumped brightness, and that made actor stand out. You would think that would work the same in FCP filter.
