Thanks for the comments everyone, especially Charles. That was very illuminating. What makes the whole issue tricky, is that as a writer you always have to be open to the possibility that maybe your script sucks. It takes a lot of discipline and humility to take criticisms and suggestions constructively. We've all met writers who can be complete babies about it. I'm fortunate to have what people tell me is a very unique situation. I don't actually direct my own material, but I have final say on all script changes. With power like that, it's important not to be a big jerk about it. I also co-produce, act as cinematographer, have 50/50 say on casting decisions, and do most of the editing. The director does the story boards, is God on the set, and has final say on the edit, so there's checks and balances here.
