And you need 2 lav mics...

I would post some Atlanta stuff, but "someone" (I can think of a suspect, but I am probably wrong) has been reporting them and counter-posting on what a ripoff they are.

Your basic craigslist post. I wonder if when he says "from my DVD feature" he means he only has it on DVD. With my, and most basic PC systems its a serious pain to go from DVD back to an editable format.

Hello. I'm an actor looking for an editor to copy scenes from my DVD feature film to another DVD. Looking for at least five copies. I can pay you only $30. Put "Actor's Reel" in the heading.

I honestly can't imagine who responds to ads like this. As Matt notes, it's a minor pain to do this. It's not even of much value for a newbie to do. It's not like you even get credit and material for your reel. He wants "at least" 5 copies for that price!

Well, you don't need your own equipment but they're looking for 8 consecutive days at $5/hr !!!! Do the math.
They DO want to see your reel. MickyDs pays more and doesn't ask to see my past burgers.

Along those same lines . . .

Several weeks ago on "Flip this House--San Antonio" real estate investor Armando Montelongo asked his wife to find a San Antonio photographer to do pro bono work for them: Be our photographer, and you'll get GREAT exposure, but we can't (read "won't) pay you. The photographer showed up, did an awesome job, got a pat on the back. The next scene shows Armando pocketing $20K for a couple weeks work. Nice guy, huh?

I'm a writer for one of the biggest comedy websites. I will only give the name to the camera man that I pick. We get 100,000 visitors a day / celebrity fans / and have been seen everywhere. If I choose you, I will send you a link to the press section with mentions everywhere from Fox News to Maxim magazine. You must have your own camera and be able to shoot on DV. This is for just a one time shoot. You must also be ok with shooting nudity. It's for comedy though. This is not a porno. I have a very limited budget for this, but this could actually lead to a tv show. This will be seen by millions of people a month, including celebrity fans. If I get a show from this, you will get hooked up PERIOD. I don't leave people behind. This is perfect for a college student studying film or anyone that wants to take a chance that can actually lead to something HUGE!!! If you have anything online that I can check out, please send it to me. By the way, as far as camera work goes, this will be a pretty easy day and you'll probably wind up enjoying it. Just don't let the microphone pick up the laughs or I'll kick your tushee!!! I WILL NOT RESPOND TO ANYONE THAT DOES NOT LEAVE THEIR PHONE NUMBER!!!!!!!! Thank you : )

Bottom line.....

PAY PEANUTS GET MONKEYS!

i'm amazed to read this thread and see the scale of whats happening in the states....

In Austraila we too are being constantly under cut by "budding cinematographers"- imposters basically....

10 years ago the standard rate for a digi beta cameraman with kit was $1000.... with a dolly or wide angle , add a couple of hundred....
Today networks and production companies are demanding digi beta for $1000 a day including wide angle, dolly and a HMI in your light kit.......

Meanwhile sound recordist rates are on the up ....10 years ago $450..... today .... anything from $450 to $550 plus any extras they may have to use....

I think the way to combat these fuckwits who ask for ridiculous jobs to be done for peanuts is to accept them and then shoot absolute shit. Unusable shit. Out of focus shit. Wobbly shit. Then label the tape " Pay peanuts get monkeys..."

I know we'd like to think they're getting "monkey" work but I fear they're actually getting talent at these prices. I imagine they're getting people just out of college but have been shooting in school for a few years. They get out of school, buy a camera and editing equipment and, desperate for work, take these jobs. Granted these kids don't have experience but I don't doubt some of them are talented. I sure that's why people are asking for reels even at these low rates. You see a newbie with a faux TV spot shot in school, with good camera work and plenty of good After Effects skills and they "bag" 'em for $10/hr.

Well said Craig, no one starts out a genius . You cannot blame a young videographer for taking advantage of technology. Do people expect them to start with panasonic ms4's or hi8 and reel to reel linear editing just cause thats how 'we used to do it'.

I appreciate the sentiment that older videographers have cause I was one of the younger guys 6 years ago in the crossover in the colleges that got trained to use both linear and non linear edit suits, ms4's, Hi8 and digital gear.

It's the same as ever, talent shows through. If your good it will show no matter what your shooting on.Granted a muppet can get hold of a good camera cheap these days but it's what they shoot that matters.

Andy.

Josh, for someone in Houston, TX you do check out NY Craigslist quite a bit don't you. You beat me to it on this one.

This guy obviously invested many thousands of dollars. That rate probably won't even cover the credit card bill let alone housing rent and food. I doubt one person can even manage all that gear. I can't believe a person who'd buy that much gear is a newbie either. There's a big issue with talented people giving themselves away for work that can't even cover costs.

Certainly there's little room in this market for someone like me who charges $400 a day for just camera, tripod, wireless mic (light kit with assistant is another $200) and I consider my rates LOW.

And because people like the above drive down rates we get cr*p like this.
$25/hr including prime lenses.

And below that someone who needs a Camera Op for the complex HVX200 and the ability to "tweak the lighting" for all of $50 and it's 40 minutes outside the city in addition, IMMEDIATELY.

Thats right...I'm talking RIGHT NOW.
if you can run a panasonic HVX200 with a firestore we need you right now!
we missed ONE important shot for our feature length film and need a quick reshoot.
the equipment all goes back in the morning so we really want to shoot this tonight!.

you would need to assemble camera, tweak the lighting and roll ONE shot and get payed 50 dollars for your time and effort.

If you can drive to location that is a plus, but not necessary. otherwise you will need to take a bus.

location is in parlin, nj about 40 minutes from the city.
