FS5M2 4k 50p external recording?
I have a shoot where the client wants 4K 50P 4:2:2 and I have the Sony FS5M2.
I've done a small search and I think the Atomos Ninja V and Ninja V+ is what I need? I'm not up to speed with the external products that I need to do this on the camera so can anyone offer advise on what I require. Cheers |

Re: FS5M2 4k 50p external recording?
Yes, you can do the following with an Atomos V:
ProRes RAW recording in 4K DCI 12 bit at up to 60p 10 bit 422 Apple ProRes/Avid DNxHR recording 4K DCI at up to 50/60p for high action scenes 2K DCI Continuous at up to 200 / 240p 4K DCI at 100 / 120p in 4 sec burst. But, this is only in ProRes RAW with the Atomos V series. If recording video not RAW you are restricted to the following frame rates in UHD, 29.97p, 25p, 23.98p. In video mode, 50p is available in HD. Most of the info you need can be found here and here. Re: FS5M2 4k 50p external recording?
Thanks Chris,
I'm still in doubt about the HDMI output if it's 8bit 4:2:2: or 10bit 4:2:2: I'm now leaning towards the V plus with the SDI module. |

Re: FS5M2 4k 50p external recording?
From my recollection, a while ago now, is that the HDMI out of the FS5 is 8-bit all the time. 4:2:2 10-bit output is only available in HD SDI mode. Again from memory, the FS7 had 10-bit up to 30p on the HDMI. Maybe someone else can chip in here and correct this info if I have it wrong.
I have the Ninja V with the SDI module. On the FS5 though, your SDI out is HD only so if recording video via SDI no 4K. If outputting RAW, then yes, you can have a 4K output to your Ninja. One word of warning with the Ninja recorders. With big batteries and SDI units mounted, there is a lot of weight back there. I've seen myself, and there are now numerous reports of the whole light plastic rear panel breaking away from the back of the Ninja if it gets a reasonable bump or knock. The whole back panel of the Ninja units are held in place by four tiny little screws into plastic posts. IMHO, only just sufficient support for the back casing only, let alone all the other bits you can connect that apply more weight and leverage if banged. Chris Young |

Thanks Chris,
I have decided to sell my FS5M2 and look for an FX6 if my job happens. |
