Anyone using a Zylight Z90 on the EX1/3?
I've read every thread I could find on this. According to Zylight support, the Z90 has a 25w power draw. The EX1R is 15w. I have an investment in Swit 8U62 batteries and Dolgin dual charger so I'm not inclined to switch to Anton Bauer power or anything.
The 8U62 is 50w. Is it pushing it to try and run both EX1 and Z90 on a single 50w Swit 8U62 or shall I put out another $250 for the Switronix 96? |

Re: Anyone using a Zylight Z90 on the EX1/3?
You are taking a big risk of tripping the overcurrent protection of the battery. I did trip it on the Swit 8U62 with a Anton Bauer Ultralight, so I would say that you would never want to use a non-LED with the Swit battery.
My backfocus screwed up a few days after the overcurrent protection shut off the power abruptly. It fixed itself with a reboot, but I would not risk using these kinds of lights on the Swit. |

Hi. I have a Z90 and the colours change when I dimmer the daylight. Buy a lightpanel Sola ENG if you want it to be used mainly in dayligt and then filter for tungsten light.

OK then, if it draws too many amps, it will trip the over current protection for sure.
a 9W light might be better suited for the Swit battery than a 20+W one. |

Re: Anyone using a Zylight Z90 on the EX1/3?
I have been using the Zylight Z90 for 4 years now and I just love the ability to change color temperature at a press of a button. I also love its light output.
Initially I was using a V-lock battery to power both EX3 and Zylight. However when I switched over to the Switronix 96 I was able to power both the EXE3 and the Z90 without any problems. I also use it on my EX1. I have never had any power problem with the Switronix 96, that is shutting down, but then the 96 is a power beast. I cannot say on the Swit BU62. Also, I am under the impression that the Z90 can draw up to 30watts at full power and not 25 watts (though I stand to be corrected). Have you tried contacting Swit and ask them about the maximum power draw that can be sustained by the BU62? If you intend to film for long periods of time (as I do) with such a combination, I sincerely suggest that you switch to the Switronix 96 - it is perfect as regards to power availability and weight and size factor. |

The Anton Bauer Ultralight I was using had similar wattage, and I suffered an overcurrent protection using the Swit battery. Getting the Switronix 96 will save you trouble later on dealing with abrupt shut-off in the middle of a take.

Re: Anyone using a Zylight Z90 on the EX1/3?
SWIT confirmed that the 8U62 would run the EX1R and Z90 without tripping anything or damaging the battery. The 8U62 provides 50w or 3.5A maximum. They also said the EX1R and Z90 add up to 40w or 2.8amps. I ran the z90 at full intensity and the EX1R with LCD on for over two hours.
It's a nice package so far. With a 3" stud, the z90 mounts easily on the rear 1/4-20 mount of the EX1R handle. |

Lots of us are happy with the Z96.

John, This is about the USA made Zylight Z90 that lets you dial in the color temperature and remote control other units .... not the LED array Z96 that's gelled to change color temp.
