soft focus on ex3?

i was looking into buying the ex3 but have been reading that the focus is soft. is this random or are alot of users having issues with it, also, heard issues with the backfocus holding as well.

I wasn't aware there were any problems with the EX3 and I've used several of them. What's your source? Canon or Panasonic owners? :-) Seriously, where you hearing these rumors? I'm sure there have been a few lemons but it's not a widespread problem or any reason not to choose an EX3.

Like Doug I have shot way too many hours with the ex-3 (one gig was 140 hours) and never found that the ex-3 was not sharp. If you have removed the lens however, even just to inspect it and then put back on be sure to perform the back focus procedure. (flange back as Sony calls it).

One more thing I shoot out doors a lot with changing temperatures and the infinity position on the lens changes slightly. What I do is before each shot refocus with the view finder magnification all the way down on telephoto and make a slight correction then compose my shot. I shoot from about dusk to near midnight and find that as the temperature goes down the focus changes ever so slightly. That little bit of difference can be noticed when zoomed all the way out .

Good luck

Maybe Jim is talking about the effect caused by using a f-stop outside of the sweet spot of the stock lens.
(Something typical in most lenses)

I love my EX3 and couldn't be happier with it.

I may be wrong but I think the sweet spot for the lens on the Ex cameras is about f 4 to 5.6. I usually shoot in a poor lite situation at night and even with gain up the f stop may be below 3. Sometimes all the way open to 1.9.

All of the footage has been good except when I screwed up and missed the shot or forgot to focus properly.
