Well, I still do not know what happened, but to finish of the thread...
My friend was able to import the mp4's from the external hard drive into Adobe Premier Pro with no problem. We then exported the clips back out as mpeg files, then converted to mp4, then I was able to see them and work with them in FCS. I was never able to read or see a single file from that day's shooting on my computer, with any of the tools available to me. The rest of the week's shooting was transferred onto external hard drive in exactly the same fashion, and I was able to read every mp4 file in every folder and import them using XDCAM transfer with no problems at all. Chalk it up to a learning experience, and from now on all downloads will be going through Sony software. Thanks for all the suggestions, this forum is such a great resource and I appreciate all the help...Jem
