overcranking 720/25p

As all PAL users might have noticed, the max speed is available for overcranking is 50fps. If you want 60fps, you need to shoot 720/24p...

Now this is obviously wasting the camera overcranking potential and I've been wondering if any reason for that exists, apart from "lazy" design?

If not, I'm putting it on the fw update wishlist :)

Erm, I use 720/60 in PAL mode daily!

S&Q, turn it on, rub it all the way to 60, and away we go. My S/W version is 1.3 I think.

It's to do with the Mhz rate at which PAL country's electricity works at (50 Mhz)

Matt, this is strange indeed, as my fw version is 1.03 as well. Even though the manual doesn't say anything about this limitation (it says that the maximum overcranking speed is 60fps for the 720, and 30fps for the 1080 mode) - I can go up to 50 fps max in the camera S&Q menu when in 720/25p (PAL) mode...After switching to NTSC area, it can go all the way up to 60fps!

Well, the manual does tell you that if you want 60P you must shoot in HQ720. PAL or NTSC really doesn't mean anything in HD. It merely affects playback speed.

I guess you misunderstand my question Serena :)

Yes, I think so. You can hardly shoot 60P when shooting 24P, so I'm confused about the problem.

I use 720/25p overcranking at 60fps all the time as well.

I used it with the firmware that was in the camera when I got it in January and I used it with this firmware that it was updated to in April when it was being serviced.

I always get confused with over/undercrank, anyways, I switch to 720/25P, go to S&Q Motion, turn it on, there I can dial in anything from 1 - 60.

Edited to add:

Current camera is FW version 1.03. Prior to my current camera, I went through 3 others. I don't know what the FW version was but the first one was bought in December. With all cameras, I could set to 60.

Piotr, the loan EX1 I have here allows 1-60 in S&Q mode regardless of Video mode too, strange it doesn't on yours.

Guys, looks like I might have some interim fw; time to update!

If only Sony let us do it ourselves...

BTW, is another wierd thing I wrote about in the "Auto Shutter speed limitation?" thread, also not common to all other units?

Yes, a lot of problems are user generated.

I can understand you felt the need to comment, Serena, but I have no idea what you mean. If you think I developed the EX1's firmware, then no - even though I've done some programming, it's not my work :)
