Re: Red Sues Sony - Regarding F5 and F55 Patent Infringments
Sony owns over 100 patents. You can bet to some degree or another RED has also used something "similar" to Sony's technology somewhere along the lines. RED may have opened a can of worms and surely Sony's legal defence team is ready.
This is just a stunt by RED and nothing more in effort to halt sales as we've seen since October when Sony first announced "The New F". October 15th - an undisclosed number of BT Scarlets being sold for 40% off October 26th - pre-announcement of pricing slashes on all RED bodies October 30th - Sony "The New F" announcement November 1st - RED announces price slash (RED slashes $15k off the EPIC and thousands off the Scarlet) November 14th - The New F pricing released. February 12th - Sony New F's start shipping February 14th - RED sues Sony RED may be "looking out for the little guy" but have been seen as tyrants in the industry leaving a sour taste in the mouths of even their own. |

Copying from Sony website:
Sony Comments re Patent Suit Filed By Red Digital Cinema On February 12, 2013, Red Digital Cinema ("Red") sued Sony Corporation of America and Sony Electronics Inc. and alleged that the Sony PMW-F5, PMW-F55, and F65 digital cinema cameras infringe two Red patents. The F65 has been commercially available for over a year and the F5 and F55 were announced in October, 2012. |

Re: Red Sues Sony - Regarding F5 and F55 Patent Infringments
Thank you for the update, Emmanuel. It will probably take some time for both sides to eventually settle. Meanwhile I would prefer that this forum be used to discuss the technical and creative aspects of actually using these cameras. Therefore this thread is closed for now, but will re-open if and when anything changes.
