ECM-HS1 Gun Zoom Microphone Questions at DVinfo.net

Has anyone used this microphone that attaches and receives power from the accessory hot shoe?

I assume if a BeachTEK type audio box is connected to the cameras mic. input that it will shut off the above hot shoe mic?

I have an ECM-HS1 ... and it is worth each penny... so like it is cheap.. i have chep performance..

it is a mono mic, that will combine your cam mic while you zoom in until you reach the max zoom, it will switch to the HS1...

prepare to receive no bass sound at all, as the condense sound will only leave mids, and highs, therefore, this mic will only be useful for certain task where you dont need bass as a serious issue.

I tried the ECM-HS1, and I thought it was terrible! Audio wasn't good, no bass and really didn't have much shotgun capabilities. At least in my infomal tests. I bought it to use on my TRV17. After I ditched it I bought a Azden ECZ-990 Much better for the money.

You definitely don't want to put the Sony 'zoom' mic on a VX2000! You could use a ECZ-990 if you are on a shoe string budget, but it's not a pro-quality mic. Good use of it is for better audion on consumer cams. A good VX2000 mic would be a Sennheiser ME64 or ME66 (longer) with a K6 battery powered module. I have the me 66, but I think the me64 might make a better cam mic since it's shorter. Not as much shotgun though. Don't forget, you will also need a good shock mount (to prevent cam noise to the mic) and a furry or Rycote softie for outdoor shooting. I think for the money, the Mike Muff (www.mikemuff.com) is a pretty good deal.
