metabones: nex speed booster vs nex smart adapter II
Hi all,
I am doing very initial research in the sony fs 700 and the accessories that I would need. I have mostly canon ef lens and a tokina 11-16 (dx). Metabones' website indicates that the speed booster DOES NOT support the tokina 11-16 (dx) but the smart adapter ii DOES support the tokina. I really like the tokina 11-16 lens and don't want to buy another wide (if I don't have to). The speed booster seems to be a better adapter (the 1 stop increase is really nice) than the smart adapter...but if it doesn't work with my tokina....hmm....hard decision to be made!!! So just curious, have anyone tried the smart adapter ii with tokina 11-16 (dx)? Also, I would appreciate any pointers between these 2 adapters. Thx... |

Re: metabones: nex speed booster vs nex smart adapter II
The Tokina 11-16/2.8 covers a full frame image circle at around 15-16mm. At 15-16mm it would work on both full-frame DSLRs and the Speed Booster. At wider focal lengths there are black corners.
A simple way to think of this is, since a DX lens won't work on a full frame DSLR, it won't work on Speed Booster either. |

Hi Bo Ming,
Thx for the reply. So, did you mean that the DX will flat out not work on the speed boaster OR it will only work at 15-16mm? Because even if it is going to work at 15-16mm, I am getting 10.5-11.2mm, which is better than nothing. Thanks. |

Only at 15-16mm - with the disclaimer that Tokina does not claim full frame coverage at any zoom position for its DX lenses and Metabones does not claim the Speed Booster would be compatible at any DX lens. In short, this usage is unofficial.

So on Monday when back in the office we need to test the Tokina 11-16 EF with the speed booster, right?

I have tested the speed booster with the Tokina DX and it will work at the 15-16mm mark but gets cropped wider than that. Allan, did you ever live in California?
