Canon FD lens set up/rig
Ok, I'm back from vacation, and as promised, here is the picture of
my cheapo 'rig' for my FD lens set up. These FD lenses are heavy and need lens support, so I had to get something. Pictured is the 28-90 F2.8 lens. I will be posting some video from this set up soon. I have longer rails and a shoulder mount on order, but I can at least shoot off the tripod now without being worried about the lens mount having too much weight on it. |

Re: Canon FD lens set up/rig
Rob,
Yeah, I hear you on the 'reasonably priced' thing. I am not spending $700 or more on 'rigging' right now, it's just not going to happen. The times I need 'rigging' are with the FD lenses, I don't have nice expensive PL zooms or anything, so I just wanted something cheap, and that would support my FD lenses. Also, I have a heliopan variable ND, so I wasn't hugely concerned about a big expensive mattebox at the current time either. So, I went on ebay and found the cheapo stuff here: DP500 DSLR rail 15mm rod support system rig for follow focus mattebox canon 5D 2 | eBay (When I bought it, I got it for $80. Different vendors have it at prices ranging from $80-$120. Search ebay for the DP 500 or something and you will see. It is pretty well made, the only problem is the rods are only 25cm long, which works, but they are a little short. However, you can buy some 18 inch rods for $35 from Ikan which I am doing). Shoulder mount here: CatClaw - Shoulder Pad Type A - Light! for 15mm Rod Rig system 5D2 7d HDSLR | eBay Sunshade here: New Matte Box for 15mm Rail Rod Support follow focus System D90 5D 60D 600D 550D | eBay It's all stuff that works on standard 15mm rods. You can piece together a decent system for under $200. Just look around ebay. Any questions, let me know. |

Re: Canon FD lens set up/rig
I'm also piecing together my FS100 rig. Bought "Proaim" rails (with follow focus), ships from India which caused me some hesitation but I received via usps right away (< 2 weeks) and the build quality is excellent. I also bought a couple 7" "friction power arm" on eBay at $22ea (from Hong Kong) which is a cold shoe mount for my Small DP6 monitor which I'm loving. Also went a little crazy on the FD lenses off eBay (hey, prices are going up!) and bought 300mm telephoto, a 50mm/1.4, and a super nice 85mm/1.8 among others and as someone suggested, bought an adapter for each lens, first the "rainbow" adapter and then the "fotolox" which seemed to worked much more smoothly for me. Holding off on matte box for now.
For the 300m telephoto, I most definitely need a lens support bracket that slides on the rails and supports the lens barrel. Any suggestions on these?? Models at B&H start at $80 and while that's not a lot of dough compared to what I've spent so far, just seems a bit much for a little bracket....Having just asked, I just checked eBay and that seems the way to go.....Loving this camera, especially in dialing in each of the FD lenses... |

Re: Canon FD lens set up/rig
That DP 500 rails set up I bought on ebay for $80 came with the lens
support mount 'built on'. That was why I got it. However, this looks close to the bracket that came with mine: heavy Lens support for 15mm Rod rig system 5D2 7D 60D | eBay for $26 not too bad. I was a little hesitant at first too, but those ebay companies overseas seem to do a pretty good job of getting your stuff to you, it takes awhile for me, as I am in Alaska, and I have fun tracking it, I saw my rig went to San Diego, then Honolulu, then Washington, then Alaska. Not sure what was going on, but I got it and it is actually not bad, I was kind of expecting cheap made stuff, but it's pretty decent.....not as good as the expensive stuff, but it will do for me. I did the whole 'go crazy on FD lenses' thing too, as I see the prices creeping up on them as well. You can find zoom ranges that aren't made anymore like the 28-90 F 2.8 that I found and other semi obscure things. The 50mm F1.4 is another good one to get. My wife was a crazy ebay shopper for clothes and things as she finds entire 'lots' of clothes that are on sale and half of them have never been worn. So I started looking and now I am kind of an ebay addict for finding video gear that saves me money. |
