Pre Purchase Question, HXR-NX3 file creation?
Currently using FX1000 tape cams, was looking at the Sony HXR-NX3 upgrade to go tapeless, one of the reviews mentioned that it will only save files up to 2gb in size. Does this mean there will be a gap (or what may seem like a dropped frame) between files? I would hate to think that during a wedding I could end up with missing frames or gaps. Also, my previous workflow would typically yield 4-5 1 hour files after ingesting tape. This was easy for me since I would edit 1 hour at a time and never lose my place. With digital recording files, I think I could end up with hundreds of clips (each time I press record), is this also true?
Thanks all. |

Re: Pre Purchase Question, HXR-NX3 file creation?
Hi Darryn
Yes file limit is 2GB so what happens after around 12 -17 mins of footage (depending on bitrate) the camera creates a 2nd file and then again when that gets to 2GB another file is created so if you record at say 24mbps and do a 45 min ceremony non stop the camera will create 000.mts and then after 12 mins it creates 0001.mts and after 24 minutes 0002.mts and so on to cover the 45 minute ceremony. You must import these spanned files with Sony Content Management Utility which will automatically bundle all the clips and import them as one. If you copy from the card you will get 6 frames of audio missing so don't do it that way! Yep, every time you hit record, a new clip is created but you get used to it and logging is way easier...I will typically have around 120 clips on my B-Cam and around 20 on the A-Cam as that is just used for the main ceremony and speeches Chris |

Re: Pre Purchase Question, HXR-NX3 file creation?
Hey Chris, been a long, but revisiting this post as I am getting the itch again. If I record a straight 45 minutes and end up with, lets say 4 different files, when I edit will these clips would I have any missing gaps between the clips? In other words, lets say I hit the 2gb mark right in the middle of the vows, would it be 100% seamless between these 2 clips when I edit ?
I am now thinking of the Sony NX30 for majority of shooting, and an MC200U shoulder mount for the brides entrances. |
