Progressive 30p vs Interlace 30p scan modes

Just when I think I understand something, I come across a question that makes me realize i don't really understand it after all. Latest case in point - In the Z7 In/Out menu, under HDV Progressive, you can set the Rec Type to Progressive 30p, or to Interlace 30p scan mode. What is the Interlace 30p scan mode? Does that mean in records in 60i, but flags so it will play back 30 progressive from that? Is there a difference in quality? I've heard you need to be careful of recording in full Progressive mode (for footage given to someone else to edit) since some players won't play that. Thanks for any enlightenment.
