New thoughts on 24p

I love the way 24p looks when I shoot weddings, but with all the flash photography causing the smearing effect is still bothering me.

I can live with it during the daylight periods cuz it obviously doesn't show as much, but at receptions it's down right awful.

Also, I know 24p isn't great for slow mo, especially panning. Is there something out there that can make it look better like After Effects or Twixtor?

I filmed a couple walking out of their ceremony with 24p and with all the bubbles and flowers being thrown it looked like they would come through and hit you. Was unreal.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yup I agree the best option I find for shooting is interlaced and then do the progressive in post.

I shoot 1080i 50i at a shutter speed of 100 and then edit in final cut in that format, I then output a master at pro res 422 1080i 25p and produce my DVD's or smaller files from that.

I use Canopus Edius 5 as my NLE.

Do I just go into the video properties and change interlaced footage to progressive? Or is there an output for it? Cuz I am not seeing that anywhere.

Just checking in case anyone uses Edius as well and has any tips.

If you shoot in interlace and then output in progressive you get artifacts. Is has some similar look to 24P but is not the same. 24P is not an effect that you cannot get is post. You can only simulate it but not achieve it. A compromise is 30p (for panning and slow motion)
