Extended warranty
I have a 2 year Sony PrimeSupport Agreement for my Z5 and is due to expire on 3 Feb 2011. I was offered by my supplier to extend this agreement for a further one year for £135.00. Is it worth it?
Sony just repaired my viewfinder under this agreement. Stelios

Hi, Stelios...........
I suppose the relevant question is this: If your 2 + year old cam experienced a sudden death event that was obviously going to take big bickies to repair, would you not be better off spending that 135 quid on a replacement than on a warranty that you MAY never need.
Without knowing what the cam cost originally, what it would be worth at 2 + years old, and the cost of a like for like replacement at time of death, a bit hard to say. Sounds like a lot of money to me for just one year, given that camera prices just keep coming down. Guess it's up to you to make the call. CS |

how much is a z5 - $4500US?
if it hasn't paid for itself in 2 years then it was an expensive investment, and another $135 isn't chicken feed...... i suppose it really depends on how many hours the cameras got on it, divided by the type of work it's used for (studio vs eng), and whether you see yourself replacing it in the next couple of years. frankly i think extended guarantees are pretty pointless nowadays - all my recent cameras have generally paid for themselves within 18 months, been sold on to friends after two year and they are still using them (yes, even my old vx1000!). interestingly enough though, i'm not sure what might follow about my z5 - the work i do generally requires my shooting tape (national broadcaster among others), and there doesn't seem to be many tape camcorders on the horizon..... |
