mic

I just purchase a Rode Videomic. When I use it on my FX1 the onboard mic remains in operation as well. Is this normal.

go to the "menu" and choose "mic / line in"

I think that's only for selecting the input voltage between mic and line devices. The internal mic should automatically cut off when something is plugged into the jack.
