Kata Glove for Z1 at DVinfo.net

Hi,
Quite like the look of the Kata CG-52 glove for the Z1/FX1. Would seem like a reasonable investment tp protect the camera, though can't see how a folllow-focus rig would attach even with the flaps folded back for the MB. That also seems like the same problem with the only other Z1 glove from Italy.

Any opinions gratefully recieved.

Just be careful of one thing. We've had a Z1 shutdown due to overheating with one of these things. It was in direct sunlight on a hot summers day in record for a long time so outside of that scenario you're probably OK.

Whilst it looks great, I'm a little wary.

Because the Z1 looks a little fragile, I'm kept aware of it - protecting it. By dressing it up in a sort of tailored bubblewrap coat, I wouldn't want it to be treated like a similarly dressed DSR-570.

If I need to shoot in light rain or where water or dust/sand is going to be a problem, then wrapping it up in a bin liner may seem a bit 'chav' but it works better than the Petrol raincoat I got free with my bag.

If your Z1 is going to spend long times away from the carry case, it may make sense, but the gaps in the case mean I wouldn't shoot near a sand pit on a windy day or keep shooting in an April Shower.

Perhaps I'm being a tad unfair. If you need a Z1 within reach for long periods of time, will be traveling a lot, and generally treating a Z1 like shoulder mount cameras are treated, perhaps it is a good idea.

As far as long periods of direct sunlight and heat are concerned, that's not something we have to worry about here in the UK at the moment!But it's something impoprtant to be aware of certainly.

I also agree it looks good, but is it just a fashion accessory to make the camera look a bit cooler, as it were, and at £100 which is its price over here seems a little steep, though I suppose it is something of a specialist/niche product. Be interesting to note how many I see out on the road.

On these small cameras I can't see the advantage of having this sort of glove.. already access to the main functions is tight so why make it even harder with this cover....

However the Kata Rain covers are the best I've used on the Z1.. I've tried most and returned them to the supplier as they are not usable with either an independent mic ..I use an AT897, large battery, radio mic velcro'd to large battery, matte box etc...
The Kata is large enough to deal with accessories....Ok you can't easily use the LCD, but when it's raining hard... I've done stuff that would have been risky on an unprotected camera..
