I have had a similar problem, but I think it had to do with the Beachtek box I was using. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've got it for my hd1, but the only time I encounter a hiss is when the battery is low, that's about it. The red indicator light flashes when you turn it on, and I usually do a test record and play back the audio to see if it sounds decent, if I hear the hiss, time to swap the battery. Other than that, the mic is ok.

I've found that putting the audio to auto tends to make it really quiet. As in -30dB... At least it's been nice and clean for me so I can boost it as much as necessary.
