HVR-Z1 Log / Capture via USB / Firewire Converter?

I recently upgraded to the new 13 inch i5 Macbook Pro from a much earlier model.

I primarily use a Z1 for camera jobs and I log / capture in FCP via Firewire.

The problem is that the new Macbook only has the Firewire 800 interface as opposed to the older one which had both 400 and 800.

What I want to know is whether or not anyone has any experience using a converter (400 to 800) to log footage?

I have tried a USB to Firewire converter but it is not recognised by the software.

I am at my wits end so any help would be greatly appreciated.
