Martin,
you are asking a fairly loaded question. The Z1U has XLR connections and a microphone holder that allow you to choose from a huge selection of different microphones. You need to think about what you want to record (dialogue, ambience, etc.) and where (inside, outside), and I guess in general whether an on-camera microphone is even the best way to go (hint: in most cases, it is not) if sound quality is important to you. Once you can summarize the expected use of the mic, I suggest you create a post over in the "Now Hear This" forum where the audio gurus hang out. They can help you find a good microphone; making that mic work with the Z1U should not be a problem. - Martin

Martin, for general purpose, you're not going to get much better than the built in mic. If you have some specifics, you could get better recommendations.
Shotguns for outdoor use, short shotguns/cards for indoor use are quite common add-on/replacement mics. In your budget, I highly recommend the AT 897.

It's not a stupid question and we that use DVinfo should be able to help people in need of information.
I use the ECM-674. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...arch&Q=*&bhs=t |

I've been using the Rode NTG2 with my dvc30 and now Z1 with good results, still going strong after rain, snow, "desert" dust and stuff you should not do with a mic.
You can either get the ntg2 which can run on batteries or phantom power or the ntg1 which is the same mic but phantom power only and is slightly shorter than the ntg2. Its about 250$ at BHP. |
