De-selecting controls

Ok, I'm baffled. To put something in manual (iris, shutter, WB, etc) you punch the button. To put something else in manual, you punch that button. To take it out of manual, you punch the button again.

So, the last thing I punch is gain. So now gain is selected. Is there a way to de-select gain (or shutter speed or whatever), so that I don't accidentally change it? I don't really want to use "Hold" because I may need to change something on purpose. It'd be nice if there were a way to de-select a control without having to punch another control (thereby toggling that other control's state...).

Am I missing something (besides my brain, y'know...)

Thanks,
Matt
