V1 and "External Sync"

Don't have our V1 as yet (we're in PAL land) but I hear and see that this camera has an external sync capability, via firewire. So far all I know is this is only from another V1 and only via firewire.
Well it's not that hard I think to get a box that'll feed out firewire with TC so the V1 will have no idea that it's not connected to another V1. However it seems the Canon has a similar feature which is pretty well nigh useless, it's simply a sync now TC capability, not a genlock capability. If this is all the Sony V1 has it's hardly a selling pint given that you can do the same thing on any existing Sony DVCAM camera with the remote.
So I'm trying to find out just what this 'feature' on the V1 really is, is it lame or is it perhaps the best feature on the camera?
