In talking with Sony engineers, I was told that to match a PDW-700 to a stock HDW-F900, sharpness on the PDW-700 should be set to -20. Further more, setting the sharpness to -36 would equal to turn the detail function OFF. The PDW-700 is razor sharp out of the box. And indeed, the maximum dynamic range is obtained when shooting at 0db gain.
