PDW-700 v1.2 firmware
Nearly the end of October and still no sign of the new firmware, anyone any news? The hypergamma tutorial that Sony posted notes that for the 700 frimware v1.2 is required, but for me it's the 720P I'm interested in.

Steve,
The updated online operation manual from october 20, for the PDW-700 says that the unit is supporting 6 system frequencies (1080/59.94i, 1080/29.97p, 1080/50i, 1080/25p, 720/59.94p*, 720/50p. So I guess their will be something up very soon. * = When the current recording format is 720/59.94p, you can shoot in 23.98p mode. However, as soon as it is shot, the video undergoes 2-3 pulldown and is recorded as 59.94p. You can download the latest manual, with 21 new pages here on Sonybiz.net |

23.98p w/pull down mode in 720? that is an interesting surprise... There is a planned paid upgrade to allow for 1080 24p (native) in Q2 2009 but I was not aware that firmware v1.2 would add this feature. Regarding 24P, I actually much prefer to shoot 24P w/pulldown. It is much easier to edit along wiht 30i material. Not all edit system support multiple framerates in the timeline, and when they do, this usually requires a render for the final output and you can definetly see a quality drop.
Thanks for the notice. Thierry. |

PDW700 firmware update at factory?
My Sony dealer has told me that the v1.2 firmware update will be available in a week or so, but that the camera has to go back to Sony to install it, and maybe replace a board. But this will still be free. Does anyone else know anything about this? I assumed it would just be over the net like the others.

Correct, there is a minor hardware modification to perform prior to install the 1.2 firmware update and for this reason, all 700s will have to be upgraded at Sony's services centers. As you correctlly mentioned, the update service will be free of charge.
